A Collaboration with Julie Qiu

Julie is an international oyster sommelier and founder of the seminal In A Half Shell oyster blog, based in New York City. Her passion for oyster appreciation is contagious, and when she reached out with the idea for an oyster journal, I jumped at the chance to collaborate. Julie's work has been featured by The New York Times, Food + Wine, Saveur, VOGUE, and Somebody Feeds Phil on Netflix. She established the Oyster Master Guild in 2023.

Designed for Speed

A flavor wheel inside lets you note a oyster's unique flavor in a quick, visual way. This oyster journal is designed for ease of use. It’s tough to hold a notepad in one hand, a pencil in the other, and have another hand left for your freshly-shucked C. virginica. Taking notes with 33 Oysters is as simple as checking a few boxes and entering a few basic facts.

The flavor wheel in 33 Oysters can be used to quickly recall an oyster’s unique flavor long after consumption. For low values of the flavor, fill in dots near the wheel’s center.

Eco-Friendly

33 Oysters is made with 100% recycled papers sourced in North America. The books are printed with care and infused with a little bit of real oyster liquor in sunny Portland, Oregon.

Printed on recycled paper in Portland, Oregon with soy inks.

A Perfect Journal for Oyster Tasting

I'm the founder of an oyster culinary tour company in Maine and we include this journal as part of our oyster tasting experiences. As a certified oyster specialist, I first and foremost use these journals to track my own tasting notes before each event. The documentation allows me to observe seasonality and changes in the oysters we work with, which is critical as a guide.

For our guests, the features in this journal hit many of our talking points. We love that it provides additional education inside the cover, and appeals to both the "writer" and the "drawer" through note taking, dot plotting, and shading. This book hits a lot of mult-sensory levels.

And lastly, you can't beat the fact that sustainable materials and oyster brine are a part of this book's appeal. For those complaining the book gets wet -- oyster brine is already in the ink -- there's no harm in adding to that. :) For an industry focused on sustainable/regenerative practices, the materials align with our values and we hope it stays that way.

Thank you, 33Books and Julie for creating a fantastic resource!

Loved the shopping tracking. The product wasn’t what I expected

I'm sorry - I try to be faster in replying to feedback but I just stumbled upon this comment. Let me know if I can do something better - I do offer returns if you're unhappy with what you got! Generally within 15 days, but since I failed to get back to you, happy to extend in this case.

Fun idea, but could be better

I love oysters and picked up this journal to keep track of all the oysters I've tried. Fun idea, but you have to plan in advance to bring the journal. Hard to keep the journal dry/clean as I'm trying oysters, especially with a group, as well. Plus needs more entries for people who eat a lot of oysters. Cool, but probably a better way to do this.

Excellent guide

So frequently I find people saying "oh, we had a really good oyster in XXX but I can't remember the name.". Here's the solution. A great way to track the abounding diversity of oysters both the novice and expert encounters!
