Illustrated Anatomy of the New York Hot Dog

$25.00 $31.00

A Twentieth Century Time Machine in Tube Form

If archaeologists in the distant future could find one artifact that would epitomize New York City in the late 20th and early 21st century, I'm not sure you could do a lot better than a New York Hot Dog. The New York Hot Dog is a monument to modernity, with its industrial age bun and cheap, perfectly uniform sausage. It epitomizes the cultural melting pot of the city: kosher dog and sauerkraut, Italian-ish tomato-onion relish, topped with Americanized deli mustard. It's commonly served up by first generation immigrants to busy city dwellers from all walks of life.

But ... it may be hard for those future archaeologists to find one. Aside from its materials, because it is so delicious, a N.Y. hot dog doesn't last long. My record is just under two minutes, but that's another story for the history books ...

This print is my homage to the humble pushcart hot dog found on every street corner in Manhattan. The print breaks down the hot dog's anatomy, ingredients, and construction in a simple, attractive print that's perfect for hanging in bars, offices, food carts, pushcarts, kitchens, and more. It makes a great gift for the New Yorker  in your life. It pairs perfectly with a copy of my hot dog journal, 33 Hot Dogs.

Make it a Combo

I have two more hot dog prints for the real frankfurter fiends. Combine my N.Y. print with the Chicago Hot Dog print and the L.A. Hot Dog print for a diet-destroying, budget-friendly combination.

Add Your Own Frame

Anatomy of the N.Y.C. Hot Dog is an easily-frameable 8 x 10 inch (20 x 25.4 cm) print - a super common size. Off-the-shelf frames are available at Target, IKEA, or even better - your friendly neighborhood frame shop!

Fresh-Pressed in Portland

This open-edition print was printed by hand, with love, on  a gluten-powered, hand-fed 1909 Chandler & Price letterpress using soy-based inks. Each color used requires a separate trip through the press. This print uses three inks: a mustard yellow, vibrant pepper green and a hot red (for the red hot).

American-made French Paper

The poster is printed on 100% recycled (30% PCW), chlorine-free French brand paper, made in Niles, Michigan. If you're as big a paper nerd as you are a hot dog nerd, you'll want to know that it's 125# Muscletone in Starch White Cover Stock.
