33 Leaves of Tea

$6.00

Pocket-Sized, Yet Powerful

33 Coffees easily fits in a back pocket and is thinner than an iPhone

33 Leaves of Tea is a tea journal that provides an easy way to quickly record tea tasting notes in a small, convenient notebook format. It’s perfect for tea novices and pros alike.

Designed for Speed

This tea journal is designed for ease of use. It’s tough to hold a notepad in one hand, a pencil in the other, and have another hand left for your cup. Taking notes with 33 Teas is as simple as checking a few boxes and entering a few basic facts.

Tea Flavor Wheel

The Flavor Goes to 11 ... Err, 20

All my other tasting journals have 16-spoke flavor wheels. That number is generally sufficient to capture most products' high-level flavors.

Tea is different. It has by far the most broad flavor spectrum of any of the books I've produced thus far. It's subtle, but complex. So I had to add 4 more spokes. 33 Teas' flavor wheel has 20 qualities listed designed to capture tea's wide range of flavors.

The flavor wheel in 33 Teas can be used to quickly recall a tea's unique flavor long after consumption. For low values of the flavor, fill in dots near the wheel’s center. An organic black tea from India is used in the example shown at right.

Secret Ingredient

A teeny, tiny amount of real tea is added to the ink in each new edition, which is cryptically noted on the back.

Eco-Friendly

33 Teas is made with 100% recycled papers sourced in the Pacific Northwest. Interior pages are 100% post-consumer recycled content and covers are 85% post-consumer recycled content and 15% recycled content. The booklets are printed using US-grown soy-based inks in sunny Portland, Oregon.

Ordered these for our teahouse..

And they are a huge hit! Customers love them. The logo embossing and quality of these books is top notch. The details of tasting a tea and how I captured it on a specific day is nice to go back and review. I added a line for weather... because an earthy pu-er on a misty day in Maine hits just the spot.

Excellent value!

Simple, inexpensive, well made, and the flavor wheel is well constructed. If you’re looking to document your tea journey or develop your palette you can’t go wrong!

Enjoy the flavor wheel the most!

So I have been using this little book for about two weeks and I feel comfortable enough to give a review.

Things I enjoy: The Flavor wheel helps me hone in on what I am tasting when I review a tea, and express it thoroughly.

Items I don't understand fully: is steep no. and sampled. For someone that is not new to tea, but definitely not an expert, obviously, it would be nice to have explanations or a filled out page example sent with the notebooks.

What I wonder about: would 33 books ever consider doing a B6 or A5 size of their journals. Reasons I ask: because the one section that didn't get you 5 stars is the note section. I can't seem to write small enough to get all my thoughts into that section and I would think a B6 size would be perfect to balance out the note section of the journal. If you need someone to test this journal size, I would be glad to.
Otherwise, all my beverage loving family & friends will be getting these journals for Christmas.

Thanks for the thoughtful review, Leann!

Steep number is a way you can track how many times you have used that bag or loose tea. Many types of tea can be brewed multiple times, and the flavor changes with each brew.

Sampled is kind of a flexible area. I usually use it for the date, but if you happen to be at an event like a tea festival, or a tasting, you can use it for that, too.

As for size, I may make a bigger journal at some point. I do offer some larger journals for MAKING beer/cider/etc. but have historically kept the tasting journals small so they're portable/pocket-sized. I use mine out in the world in normal, non-Covid times, at teahouses, taprooms, wineries, etc. But I get it - appreciate your feedback.

The most joy I've bought for $5

This little book has been my companion for the past 2 years, as I've used it about once a month when trying new teas from Upton. It's allowed me to create a small ritual around choosing, buying, brewing and tasting new teas. I always look forward to making notes in it! I feel like a super-serious scientist as I go through the motions of sipping, tasting, thinking, and marking my assessment on the flavor wheel. I treasure this book because of the quiet experiences it enables me to create for myself. THANK YOU!!
